How Andre Contacted Me
Andre reached out to me to say he wanted to do a session with Mary and said “I have a surprise planned.” My heart nearly jumped out of my chest. Mary and I are friends and so I was so happy for her. Andre confirmed that what I was thinking was exactly what he meant. We were going to do a surprise proposal!! I was ecstatic and never have I ever been such a good actor before. We quickly informed Mary, but of course left out all the details. She never knew I spoke to Andre, I just told her that I really wanted to do a “a couple session” with them. She didn’t suspect a thing! I’m so proud of us.
They really wanted to do the session at the Santa Barbara Botanical Gardens because they love it there, but the fires at the time made it difficult. Andre was persistent though, he really wanted to do the surprise proposal on November 11, 2018. He also wasn’t sure when he’ll have another convenient day off. They still wanted a garden so we went to the Huntington Library Botanical Garden. We drove together, Mary had no clue!
Huntington Botanical Garden
The garden was so beautiful! There were multiple gardens with different characteristics in each one. The desert garden was one of my favorites, the Chinese garden was also very neat. Each one had its own charm. It was fun exploring and photographing them. If you haven’t been there, you need to go.
Mary kept cracking jokes about Andre’s fear of commitment. Really pure jokes, but funnier than they would normally be because of what was to come later in the day. She was totally oblivious. We first explored the each garden and photographed their “couple session” while we very discreetly looked for our perfect spot for the proposal. Andre really liked a specific spot in the Chinese Garden so I brought it up during lunch, said we had to go there for sunset.
The Surprise Proposal
We were all pretty tired but I said something along the lines of “Mary, there’s this one spot in the Chinese Garden that I really want to photograph during sunset.” She said yeah, of course, or something along those lines. So we went! I had them stand in the spot. She had no clue. Look at the photos below to see how the surprise proposal unfolded. “Shut up, no!” were her first words. Then she said “Shut, up, get up.” And then, “Yes, but no” hahaha and a bunch more “shut-ups.” It was definitely fun to watch, and beautiful to capture. The surprise proposal went perfectly. Mary couldn’t stop crying nor smiling, Andre couldn’t stop laughing. I was thrilled.
Andre bought a few different sized rings from Amazon and used a random one to propose. He knew Mary wanted her dad to design her ring (he is a jewelry designer), so he thought ahead and instead, put his focus on looking for her size. His goal was more sentimental than I would have predicted. To me, the ring looked real lol but he explained as he took out a bunch from a bag he had in his pocket.
After the Proposal
After the proposal we went back to the Desert Garden and photographed just a bit more there. Then, we drove back to their home town and walked around the shopping areas, talked, and laughed a lot about Mary’s reaction and continued disbelief of what just happened. They also bought me ice-cream at the end of the night and introduced me to my favorite ice-cream shop, Salt and Straw. This isn’t an ad, you just HAVE to try it if you haven’t already.
Anyway, enjoy the images from this surprise proposal!
Now tell me that wasn’t sweet, I dare you. Are you planning on proposing?? Know anyone who is?! Well, either send them this blog post alreadyyyy or reach out to me and let’s talk!
