We’re in the 21st century, and these days, there are several reasons why couples elope. This year gave us an entirely new meaning to eloping, and an understanding as to why eloping is so popular. Here are 5 reasons why you should elope in 2020. There are many different ways to elope. It doesn’t have to mean, or look like, a shot-gun wedding with Elvis as your officiant.

There are also a ton of ways you can explain your decisions to your friends and family who may not understand. If you’ve wanted to elope but have been so nervous as to how you’d need to explain this to friends and family, COVID-19 just gave you the biggest and best excuse ever.

Let’s dive into some of the reasons couples opt to elope and decide to ditch the big wedding, regardless of the year!

        WHY COUPLES ELOPE:

        1. THEY WANT THE FOCUS TO TRULY BE ON THEIR LOVE AND UNION

Big weddings have a tendency of shifting focus from the true meaning of the day, from the love of the two humans getting married, to everything else. This easily happens when mother-in-laws, cousins, sisters, and friends are involved and want their ideas and opinions to be at the forefront. It can get complicated and stressful. I’m not saying anyone does anything maliciously, the idea is that it can get very overwhelming, very quickly. So, some couples opt to simply avoid that, and go straight to the adventure and beginning of their story by eloping.

        2. SAVING MONEY IS VERY IMPORTANT

The reality is that Big Weddings are expensive as heck. As a vendor I know and understand this. Every aspect of the day, even things I hardly think about, like tables and chairs, and other rentals, can add up incredibly quickly. Some couples simply want to cut costs in half. Venues alone start at $10K and can go up to $30K. Eloping completely removes that expense. Usually, eloping involves a core group of vendors: photographer, florist, wedding dress and suit. This makes costs decrease dramatically. Remember, it can be easy and focused. There are no rules!

        3. DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, IT’S THE SAFEST WAY TO GO

The blatant truth is that health is our biggest concern right now. We’re in the middle of a pandemic and gathering a group of more than 10 (in open spaces, up to 40 guests can still be safe) people can be harmful and even deadly to some individuals. If gatherings take place during this time, the bride, groom, vendors, and guests will be put in an incredibly rough position. The safest way to go is Eloping. You have the best excuse to get hitched during this time. This the main reason of the 5 reasons you should elope specifically in 2020.

        4. IT’S NERVE-RACKING HAVING SO MANY PEOPLE STARING

Some people just don’t want to be the center of attention in a group of so many people! I get it. Public speaking fears, the fear of performing, etc. I’ve had past couples not read their vows to each other during the ceremony because they were nervous about being so personal in front of so many people.. AT THEIR OWN WEDDING. Past grooms have told me they didn’t cry as she walked down the aisle, not because they didn’t think she was ridiculously gorgeous and that they were lucky, but because there were just too many people staring and for that reason, they were consumed by nerves. Do what feels right for you.

        5. COMBINING THE WEDDING AND HONEYMOON IS A WIN-WIN

If you want a reason to explore a new place and you and your partner love to travel, eloping in your honeymoon destination might just be the perfect combo. Here’s how you can spend money on an experience you’ll truly love, rather than on objects you may forget! One sweet thing about this is that you’ll also have professional photos from your honeymoon to forever remember!! This entire escapade can be a romantic and fun getaway that allows you to read your vows out loud, cry during the first look, and have your first dance on the cliffs of Big Sur (*insert your favorite destination*) while the waves crash down below and whales peek up to say hello.

2020 AND ITS CRAZINESS WON’T GET IN THE WAY

The year 2020 came out of nowhere. It was initially a year of many hopes and dreams, of many statements claiming it to be “the” year. But it turned into what seems like a Twilight Zone episode. Regardless of how things seem to keep playing out, I hope you take these 5 reasons why you should elope in 2020 to heart. Right now, big weddings are completely halted, but take it more as an opportunity to do things minimally, without the stress of planning, and in the comfort of your lover’s arms. Eloping during this time is allowed because it is a safe way to declare your love and make your union a possibility. Love isn’t cancelled.
